That's true alex-c, a ground temperature change of 40 degrees is very unrealistic. I had used a much smaller value at first for the temperature change, but then adjusted it up after thinking about it. For one thing, I'm not sure that all gas stations store the gas tanks below ground. The second thing I considered was actually from another tip from the email, the gas delivery. Though the sediment getting stirred up that the tip refers to strikes me as an unlikely cause for concern, I believe the gas delivery actually would raise the temperature of the gas stored in the tanks since the truck is likely much warmer then the tank.

Forty degrees is still likely to be overkill, but since I'm making a lot of assumptions here, I prefer to estimate everything as a worst case.

Thanks for doing the calculation on how much money a 40-degree change in gasoline temperature could "save" at the pump.

But the original is based on the incorrect believe that the temperature in the gas station's storage tanks changes.
The bit about the temperature of the ground is nonsense. These tanks are deep in the ground. ANYTHING underground more than a few inches doesn't change temperature from day to night. Get down even 5 feet and the soil temperature hardly even changes between summer and winter. So IF there's any logic to the "fill up in the early morning" at all, the reason given is flawed. And although gasoline undoubtedly changes density with temperature, and to a million gallon operation that may be significant, the expansion can't but add up to a few cents in a cars gas tank:

These kinds of snap judgment things always make me wonder if it's something hard wired, some sort of visual cues that we're using to identify the dominant pack member, so to speak, without being aware of it. I tend to think that if someone is able to present themselves better, it is somewhat of an indicator of competence. At least they have the good sense to listen to their handlers. I'm not getting into physical attractiveness here, just neat appearance.

I'm just saying that I'd probably vote for the person that has it all together over the person that presents his or herself in a poor way.
